Solidarity Youth in Tucumán, Argentina

The service-learning project “La mesa de mi tierra” [“Laying my land’s table”] started in La Ramada, in the province of Tucumán. Young students studying Agricultural Production at the “Mariano Ramos” Technical School in that town share their knowledge with the community to improve eating habits and reduce the cost of products. The project has been active for several years, consisting of designing and building vegetable gardens in the farms and houses of the community, either in backyards or plots of land or in wooden containers, in case there is no adequate space. It allows them to gain experience in different areas related to their school subjects while contributing to improving their neighbours’ and families’ quality of life.

Promoted by the students and the school, the project counts with the support of INTA (the National Agricultural Technology Institute in Argentina). It also includes workshops, training and supervision of the vegetable gardens to improve and sustain them. In turn, those young students advise the community’s primary schools and kindergartens, thus creating a comprehensive and multiplying network.

The project was selected among others by the jury in the 2023 edition of the Presidential Award Solidarity Schools in Argentina.
