5th International Service-Learning Conference in Uruguay

With the motto “What is education for?”, we held the annual SSL event co-hosted by CLAYSS Uruguay and the Universidad Católica del Uruguay.

The meeting was on 25th July from 2 to 6.30 p.m. in the Bauzá hall of the Universidad Católica del Uruguay, located at Avda. 8 de octubre 2738, in the city of Montevideo. Cindy Mels, Director of Education at UCU, Luis Parodi, coordinator of La Casa de los Sueños (a project for homeless people) and Nieves Tapia, General Director of CLAYSS participated in the opening panel, with the participation of Zelmira May (UNESCO Uruguay) as moderator.

The conference room was at its full capacity, with more than 120 professors and students from the university, and professors from the UTU (University of Labour of Uruguay), primary and secondary schools and the National Institute for Social Inclusion of Adolescents (INISA) centres.

At the end of the conference, our director Nieves Tapia and Andrea Ferreira from the Organization of Ibero-American States in Uruguay, presented the book Cómo desarrollar proyectos de aprendizaje-servicio solidario. Manual para los diversos niveles educativos y la educación no formal [How to develop solidarity service-learning projects. Handbook for different levels and non-formal education]. The event was organized with the support of the Directorate of Education of MEC (the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay), the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP), UNICEF Uruguay, the office of the Organization of Ibero-American States in Uruguay, the “El chajá” Civil Association and the SL Uruguayan Network.
