Students from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and the Universidad Iberoamericana, developed and jointly collaborated in reforestation in the Barranca de Tarango, in Álvaro Obregón, Mexico City.
During a field day at the end of June, this solidarity service learning initiative was part of the activities of the Service-Learning Network in Mexico, which is very close to CLAYSS. It was also part of the research project Sistematización de experiencias educativas para la ciudadanía mundial en distintos contextos nacionales [Systematisation of educational experiences for global citizenship in different national contexts] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIbcLMg0GuU), funded by PAPIIT DGAPA UNAM [IN307524].
It was a true solidarity service learning activity shared by the young people involved, with the participation and guidance of the Ríos Tarango civil association (https://rios-tarango.org/). The proposal, based on the slogan “Let’s plant a tree and preserve areas of environmental significance”, invites the community to raise awareness of the community needs, affected by deforestation over time. The Tarango Ravine is an area of environmental value, and the Ríos Tarango association has jointly worked with neighbours, institutions and communities in the region since 2015 to make it a vital green lung once again.
