It results from the collective production of faculty and researchers from different Spanish universities. This recently published book offers a detailed guide for service-learning implementation at universities. It provides a broad conceptual framework that interconnects the central dimensions of service-learning in light of the experiences and reflections of professors who have participated in project management. Based on the recommendations of the UNESCO report Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education (https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000381560), it advocates for the development in universities of cooperative, collaborative and solidarity-based pedagogies for more inclusive, equitable and environmentally friendly societies.
The book has three purposes that are systematically recovered in each of the compiled works: to offer a conceptual map with the core dimensions that combine the service-learning framework, to provide a guide to implement projects and to disseminate the reflections of professors who have approached this pedagogy and educational practice under unique conditions and circumstances.
The classic SSL topics are addressed in nine chapters dealing with the following: the key characteristics that have historically shaped SL practices, the basic regulatory framework and the main institutional guidelines that support it in the university contexts of the European area, the methodological foundations, the assessment of needs, the types of service that faculty and students can implement in SL experiences, the learning achieved, the establishment of links between the university and its community within the framework of horizontal relations, inclusion and social justice, as well as the political and ethical aspects of educational actions, the types of participation and the evaluation of the projects.
The end of this collective work describes some of the epistemological and ontological foundations of the main research models approaching service-learning: the positivist or quantitative aspect and the interpretative or qualitative aspect. The influence of this pedagogical practice on the participants in its implementation —students, faculty and community partners— is analyzed, and the scope and challenges that remain are discussed.
La pedagogía del aprendizaje-servicio en la universidad. Hoja de ruta para el profesorado [Service-learning at university. Roadmap for teacher-training institutions], The pedagogy of service-learning at the university. Hoja de ruta para el profesorado, published by Octaedro Ediciones and freely distributed, is a valuable, holistic and practical contribution to introduce professors interested in taking the leap and exploring other ways of teaching at the university. It encourages meaningful learning, with a view of the environment and a vocation for transforming social reality.
